DESCRIPTION:GET LOST IN THE MUSIC: TECHNO – ELECTRONICA – TRANCE – DANCING\n\n\nOn the surface\, Colleen Martin’s arrival on the techno scene a couple years ago was a curiosity\, the type of thing social media managers buzz over. Here was a former go-go dancer\, fashion stylist and performance artist\, best known for her work with Lady Gaga\, performing live with Surgeon\, one of techno’s most respected figures. But underpinning the story were some almost philosophical questions—questions about “who gets to do” techno\, about how we perceive authenticity\, and about the barriers we erect around culture. Martin was expecting this. “When I started doing techno\, anybody that I would talk to that had some involvement in the scene were just like\, ‘Ah it’s not going to work\, nobody’s going to accept you\, it’s not going to work with the pop star association\,'” she told me at her apartment in Berlin last month. \n \nAs Martin pointed out\, we may not have even been talking that day if it weren’t for a single fateful night a few years ago. Surgeon and his wife were at a Lady Gaga concert in Birmingham\, and were surprised to find the support act\, Lady Starlight\, warming up with an uncompromising live techno set. Starlight told the audience how excited she was to play the hometown of one of her heroes\, Surgeon\, and the pair wound up meeting after the show. It was the start of an ongoing live performance collaboration that’s seen them play across Europe. Surgeon has called Martin “the techno sister that I was separated from at birth.” \n \nFor Martin\, the switch to techno is just the latest in a series of left turns. She’s spent her career trying to challenge people’s expectations\, fuelled not by a sense of arrogance but a natural curiosity and an appetite for hard work. Kathleen Hanna sang\, Tobi Vail played drums\, Billy Karren (a.k.a. Billy Boredom) played guitar and Kathi Wilcox played bass. Sometimes they switched instruments. Bikini Kill is credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement in the early 90’s via their political lyrics\, zines and confrontational live show. \nThe band started touring in June 1991. In addition to touring the US several times\, they also toured Europe\, Australia and Japan. Bikini Kill recorded and released a demo tape\, two EP’s\, two LP’s and three singles. Their demo tape was self-released\,while their first two records came out as a full length CD/Tape and their singles were posthumously collected on CD. \nBikini Kill believed that if all girls started bands the world would change. They actively encouraged women and girls to start bands as a means of cultural resistance. Bikini Kill was inspired by seeing Babes in Toyland play live and attempted to incite female participation and build feminist community via the punk scene. They used touring as a way to create an underground network between girls who played music\, put on shows and made fanzines. This independent media making and informal network created a forum for multiple female voices to be heard. \nBikini Kill reunited in the Spring of 2019 with original members Kathleen\, Kathi\, and Tobi who were joined live by Erica Dawn Lyle. DESCRIPTION:GET LOST IN THE MUSIC: TECHNO – ELECTRONICA – TRANCE – DANCING\n\n\n \nMartin Schacke is one of the primary figures of the Danish “fast techno” scene centered around Copenhagen’s Fast Forward Collective. His raw\, ecstatic tracks typically exceed 140 beats per minute and recall styles such as Hi-NRG\, schranz\, and hard trance. Releasing EPs as Schacke since 2016\, he broke through with the acclaimed single “Kisloty People” in 2019. \nEven though Schacke is best known for making techno\, he’s been playing in punk bands since he was a teenager\, and has released dozens of black metal\, noise\, and industrial releases as part of numerous different projects\, and has run the cassette label Moral Defeat since 2014. Patterns of Susceptibility\, his first techno EP credited simply as Schacke\, was the debut release on Ectotherm in 2016. This was followed by Make Them Remember in 2017. Copenhagen’s Fast Forward parties began receiving international press in 2018\, and the Kulør 001 compilation\, including two tracks by Schacke\, helped introduce the fast techno scene to the world. Schacke’s Met Her at the Herrensauna EP was released by Interstate Records at the end of the year\, and Welcome to the Pleasure Dome came out on Instruments of Discipline in 2019. Shortly after\, Kisloty Forever was released by the label named after St. Petersburg club Kisloty\, which had shut down that year. Built around samples of Russian pop acts from the ’90s and early 2000s\, the EP included the anthemic “Kisloty People\,” which became a major club hit and was named the best track of the year by Resident Advisor. DESCRIPTION:THE GROUND PRESENTS BREAKBOT ON MAY 14TH 2022!\n\n\nThe story of Breakbot begins at the heart of the aughts in front of a computer with hands dancing over a keyboard. Thibaut Berland had just graduated from art school specialising in 3D animation and was working for different production companies. In his spare time\, on his own\, young Thibaut made a few remixes with the help of some handy softwares. His remix of “Let There Be Light” by Justice landed on one of the duo’s LPs produced by Ed Banger and its captain Pedro Winter. Following that first release\, carried by the echo of MySpace\, Breakbot earned himself a small reputation and started rearranging tracks for the likes of Metronomy\, Digitalism and Data. He soon stopped working on images to concentrate on music. \nIn 2009\, Breakbot signed on Ed Banger and published his first single the following year\, Baby I’m Yours\, a sugary retro track reflecting his best inspirations\, between the Pacific pop of the Doobie Brothers and Chic’s satin disco. To give his groove more shape\, he called on singer Irfane’s melodic voice. The singer\, who is from Strasbourg with Yankee origins\, had also made a name for himself in the mid-aughts by lending his Curtis Mayfield-like singing to the funky band Outlines. \nSigned on the Berlin label Sonar Kollektiv\, Outlines made a string of hit songs that ended up on Radio Nova’s playlist\, along with some great remixes for DJ Mehdi among others. \nBreakbot and Irfane met toward the end of the years 2000 at a release party for Ed Banger colleague Krazy Baldhead and haven’t left each other’s side since. \nAfter the Baby I’m Yours EP and a few other similar projects\, Breakbot released his debut album in 2012 on Ed Banger. By Your Side\, a sun-filled soundtrack with cheeky writing\, where the bass line and the guitar answered each other in a rhythmic lovefest. \nFive of the thirteen album tracks were carried by Irfane’s boogie voice. \nTogether\, Breakbot and Irfane have presented By Your Side in all the big cities of the world on a tour that has lasted almost two years. This long meandering finally gave the two friends the idea to create a duo. Today\, Breakbot isn’t just a longhaired stringy guy\, but a bubble in which Irfane has naturally found his place. Breakbot and Irfane are Breakbot. “I am Thibaut’s break” routinely says Irfane. \nIn 2016\, the new Breakbot version “one plus one” released a second album\, Still Waters\, a new assortment of southern sunrays\, with swinging images of dancefloors filled with guys in flowing trousers and bare-shouldered young girls. For this occasion\, Breakbot and Irfane followed a well-oiled formula. They each cook-up outlines of rhythms and melodies that the two boys then modify\, complete and prolong to reach a final draft. For Still Waters\, which also contains 13 tracks\, Breakbot have nonetheless tried out a few new moves: unlike the previous album\, this one is more of a matrix with intricate workmanship\, carved out with the help of old analogue machines rather than softwares. Some of these tracks were also happy accidents from improvisation sessions\, ricochets of voices and chords born of old-school jamming sessions. Thirteen bouncy acts with Stevie Wonder and the Motown crowd in the background\, spouts of funk and disco on a well-trodden dancefloor. Crafty ideas whipped-up in a vintage outfit with techno vibes and futuristic accelerations creating a perfectly current soundtrack. Tomorrow’s retro. \nWith Still Waters\, Breakbot introduced its new head along with a new uniform. With the help of art director Philippe Jarrigeon\, the guy wearing short shorts and knee-high socks has become a character in a cocktail coloured costume\, like a Florida prince. We’re not going to talk about how the Pharcyde was one of the most popular Hip Hop acts of that era nor are we going to talk about the necessary lineup changes needed to move forward. \nNo. We’re going to talk about where they are now and how IMANI\, Slimkid3\, and Fatlip made what was once only a dream finally come true. Officially reunited as The Far Side (formerly of the Pharcyde)\, the talented West Coast trio is preparing to embark on a six-week spring tour in April. \nBut before that was even a possibility\, IMANI had to go through some spiritual transformations that took him to a place of forgiveness and acceptance. After all\, in a 2015 interview\, IMANI said it would essentially take an act of God for him to reunite with Slimkid3 and Fatlip\, who’d been performing as Bizarre Ride following the Pharcyde’s split. But after the death of his grandmother\, life looked different. \n“That’s just really what it was\, just to keep it real\,” IMANI says. “I was dealing with issues inside my own head\, and I thought it was the world\, but it was inside my own mind. I created my own demons. \n“I asked myself\, ‘What do you want if you don’t have to worry about what anybody else’s wants or to make anybody else happy?’And the first thing that came up to me\, the universe said\, ‘You got to make it right with your brothers.’And the universe didn’t say\, “Make music with them.” It said\, ‘Make it right.’” \nAnd that’s precisely what he did. The Far Side (formerly of the Pharcyde) is currently working on new music and a 30th-anniversary project to commemorate the release of Bizarre Ride II. A limited-edition producer’s tape was released on January 22nd featuring The Far Side (formerly of the Pharcyde)\, Wu-Tang Clan luminary Inspectah Deck and more. The duo play to the complementary dynamics of their unlikely pairing by blurring the lines between R&B and dance-pop\, heartbreak and bliss. \n  \nRosa grew up in a musical household; her parents played in a reggae band and toured as a family\, homeschooling Rosa into her early teens and limiting her listening primarily to Sade\, oldies\, Brazilian and Afrobeat music. She kept poetry journals and by high school started writing songs and making beats. After moving to Chicago in 2010\, Rosa connected with THEMPeople\, a collective at the center of the city’s sprawling hip-hop scene. \n  \nMeanwhile\, Shehade inherited a strong work ethic from his immigrant parents. Born in Chicago\, he fell in love with DJ culture as a kid and took up music production and engineering; his interest eventually led to professional opportunities\, including early studio work with Chance the Rapper\, Kanye West\, and music projects for MTV and Bravo. Since a chance meeting in 2014 lead to the creation of DRAMA\, the duo has bootstrapped a subtle rise on their own terms\, self-releasing several EPs and mapping multiple tours with Midwestern grit. \n  \nIn early jam sessions the chemistry was clear; Rosa’s soulful delivery interlocked with Shehade’s chic Chicago house-infused production style. DESCRIPTION:THE GROUND PRESENTS ROSS FROM FRIENDS ON MARCH 3TH 2022!\n\n\nRoss From Friends\, AKA British producer Felix Clary Weatherall\, released his keenly anticipated second album ‘Tread’ on 22nd October via Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint. An artist who demonstrates an ever-increasing mastery of his craft\, ‘Tread’ is a record that is at once sleek and melodic but also eminently danceable\, nostalgic but brilliantly modern\, with nods to sounds and styles that are not so much reflected but refracted and recontextualised through Clary Weatherall’s lens. \nIn 2018—following a handful of revered and sought-after singles and EPs throughout the mid-2010’s on labels such as Breaker Breaker\, Lobster Theremin\, Distant Hawaii\, Magicwire and Molten Jets—Ross From Friends announced his signing to Flying Lotus’ legendary Brainfeeder label with the release of his ‘Aphelion’ EP. Accelerating a sonic shift that continues to this day\, the release was characterised by an obsessive attention to detail that manages to marry an intricately layered production style with warm\, heavily saturated sonics and emotive songwriting. \nThis was followed the same year by his debut album ‘Family Portrait’—the culmination of almost two years of intense studio time\, working 20 hour days\, and often spending months perfecting just one aspect of a track. ‘Family Portrait’ was hailed as “a powerful debut” by Crack Magazine and was described by Mixmag as “a gliding and glittering tour de force” in their ‘Albums of the Year 2018’ roundup. NME praised Clary Weatherall’s unique sonic identity as “a mind-melting picture that takes in house\, techno\, jazz and ambient music\, and ties it together to make something distinctly unique” and Rolling Stone declared him “a master of fun\, gooey textures”. Similar praise came from the likes of Resident Advisor\, The Wire\, Pitchfork\, AV Club\, Loud & Quiet\, DJ Mag\, Clash\, PopMatters\, FADER and more. \nOn an album that was dedicated to\, and inspired in part\, by his parents\, a particular highlight was the release of the official video for “Pale Blue Dot”. Made up of footage shot by his mum when she and his dad had just met\, the video follows his parents-to-be on a bus trip around Europe in 1990\, travelling through France\, Belgium\, West and East Germany (though returning through a unified one) and beyond\, setting up their makeshift sound system in towns and villages in order to share their passion for the sounds of hi-NRG dance\, Italo disco and proto-Techno through spontaneous parties in whatever venue they could find. \n2019’s ‘Epiphany’ EP\, also on Brainfeeder\, was dedicated to (and named after) Clary Weatherall’s sister: “One of the most important role models I have” he said at the time. Constructed with the dancefloor at the forefront of his mind\, the three tracks assembled on “Epiphany” represented a sleeker and tougher sound than his acclaimed debut\, but with his signature warmth and personality is ever present. Continuing his interest in the visual realm the EP artwork was created by legendary pro skateboarder artist Chad Muska\, and the titular lead single came with an animated video directed by Theo Nunn (Lisbon Studio)\, guiding the viewer through a psychedelic sci-fi dystopia. \nMore recently\, Clary Weatherall launched his own label Scarlet Tiger as an outlet for releasing his own productions alongside “friends and folk I’ve met online over the years”\, marking the inaugural release with his own ‘Burner’ single in January 2021\, followed by an EP from RFF band mate Cameo Blush\, and most recently by an EP from Giulia Tess in August. \nNow\, Ross From Friends has released ‘Tread’\, a showcase of his ever evolving talent\, dailling up the intricate and emotive qualities of his production style that have previously led Mixmag to praise his “idiosyncratic dexterity that not only makes your heart ache\, but dance right out of your chest”. Central to the creation of ‘Tread’ is “Thresho”\, a piece of software designed and built by Felix himself —and available via Ableton’s Max For Live platform—that starts recording once the audio hits a user-defined threshold\, then stops once it goes below that threshold\, automatically saving and indexing the resulting clips alongside timestamps. This led to a revelation in how he approached the production and writing on ‘Tread’\, and meant he spent the first six months just experimenting with his hardware\, not actually committing to any music\, but with “Thresho” quietly recording everything he was doing\, each session leaving its mark on an ever expanding library of his own samples. When he later came to composing the album\, he was then able to draw on specific moments\, either recalling the exact date or time he had made a recording\, or simply browsing the now vast audio library of his own making.  \nWith ‘Thresho’ being so integral to the album Felix also made the decision to share this vast bank of recordings that were the foundations of ‘Tread’ and in doing so\, offer up a peek behind the scenes at the creative process of one electronic music’s most individual and compelling voices. Fans have been invited to explore this resource and share their interpretations\, versions\, iterations and interactions. \nA cornerstone of Ross From Friends music has always been the blistering Ross From Friends 3-man live show—comprising Felix\, Jed Hampson & John Dunk—that delivers a killer blend of live musicianship (guitar\, keys and sax) and electronics and has graced stages at the likes of Coachella\, Glastonbury\, Primavera and Sonar to name a few. With multiple sold-out dates across previous tours throughout the UK\, EU\, Australia and North America\, the trio are returning to a headline tour in the UK\, Europe and North America in 2022. \n \nDJ Stingray or Sherard Ingram\, is the founder of Urban Tribe and associate of legendary Detroit electro duo Drexciya. As both a DJ and producer\, Ingram specializes in futuristic electro\, preferring fast tempos and inventive beat patterns to more accessible\, club-friendly rhythms. When asked to describe his style of electronic music he prefers to classify it as Techno. \nTaught how to DJ by Kenny Dixon\, Jr. (Moodymann) in the mid-80s\, he gradually developed and perfected his dense\, high-speed mixing style\, DJing at biker bars (such as The Outcast) in Detroit. Slipping bits of techno tracks in with Miami booty bass and West Coast electro and hip-hop. \nIn the late 80’s while working in the record shop Buy Rite music he met the late James Stinson of Drexciya and eventually became friends. Shortly thereafter Stinson asked Ingram to be the opening DJ for Drexciya’s tour. This when the name DJ Stingray was given to Ingram. “Did I feel like a stingray? Never. But I wasn’t going to argue with James Stinson. I felt it and I understood what he wanted\, because I understood the Drexciya legacy. I was Stingray from that day on.” This is also when he started to use his signature balaclava\, which at first was supposed to be the same Underground Resistance mask used by the rest of the crew. DESCRIPTION:The Ground presents a late night\, high energy evening with Melbourne’s Roza Terenzi + legendry techno pioneer DJ Nobu.\n\n\nRoza Terenzi’s productions are prime for interstellar communication; sublime mind dance\, warehouse bleeps and dawn-ready breaks that will inevitably find union between earth people and other beings.  \nSince moving from Perth to Melbourne in 2016\, her immense DJ style and consummate live sets at Inner Varnika\, Meredith and Strawberry Fields have cemented her as a vital component of Australia’s dance music mecca. Devoted to her local scene with releases via Butter Sessions\, Bizarro\, Pelvis and Voyage\, Terenzi’s spent the majority of 2018/2019 answering international calls. Extensively touring UK/Europe\, India and North America\, she’s brought her bush doof energy to Primavera\, Dekmantel\, Lente Kabinet and Honcho Campout\, twisting club havens Säule\, Pickle Factory\, De School\, Robert Johnson\, Closer and Nowadays. \nThis time on the road has only strengthened her production output. Inaugurating Planet Euphorique with Vancouver likemind DJ Zozi (aka D. Tiffany)\, she’s released quasi-cosmic atmospherics on Dekmantel and her signature alien beatdown on Kalahari Oyster Cult\, while remixing 90s rave masters DJ Trance and Darwin Chamber and new wave electroids Assembler Code and Jensen Intercepter. \n \nJapan’s DJ Nobu is one of a kind; a DJ with no fixed style but instead a very real ability to draw on a wide world of music and cook up his own unique sound spaces. \nNobu is something of a cult figure for those who know with decades of experience\, all of which are distilled at his acclaimed party ‘Future Terror’\, his label ‘Bitta’ and his few choice production outings.  \nAll of this has slowly but surely turned Nobu from being one of Japan’s\, to one of the world’s most in demand selectors who is famously flexible and ever evolving. \n \nThe Ground is now cigarette free.
