DESCRIPTION:GET LOST IN THE MUSIC: TECHNO – ELECTRONICA – TRANCE – DANCING\n\n\nOn the surface\, Colleen Martin’s arrival on the techno scene a couple years ago was a curiosity\, the type of thing social media managers buzz over. Here was a former go-go dancer\, fashion stylist and performance artist\, best known for her work with Lady Gaga\, performing live with Surgeon\, one of techno’s most respected figures. But underpinning the story were some almost philosophical questions—questions about “who gets to do” techno\, about how we perceive authenticity\, and about the barriers we erect around culture. Martin was expecting this. “When I started doing techno\, anybody that I would talk to that had some involvement in the scene were just like\, ‘Ah it’s not going to work\, nobody’s going to accept you\, it’s not going to work with the pop star association\,'” she told me at her apartment in Berlin last month. \n \nAs Martin pointed out\, we may not have even been talking that day if it weren’t for a single fateful night a few years ago. Surgeon and his wife were at a Lady Gaga concert in Birmingham\, and were surprised to find the support act\, Lady Starlight\, warming up with an uncompromising live techno set. Starlight told the audience how excited she was to play the hometown of one of her heroes\, Surgeon\, and the pair wound up meeting after the show. It was the start of an ongoing live performance collaboration that’s seen them play across Europe. Surgeon has called Martin “the techno sister that I was separated from at birth.” \n \nFor Martin\, the switch to techno is just the latest in a series of left turns. She’s spent her career trying to challenge people’s expectations\, fuelled not by a sense of arrogance but a natural curiosity and an appetite for hard work. She’s humbled that she seems to have been accepted by her new scene (her blistering debut has just been released on Stroboscopic Artefacts)\, but she sees it as her artistic duty to question techno’s established order. \n18+

DESCRIPTION:THE GROUND AND SWEAT RECORDS PRESENTS BIKINI KILL ON MAY 28TH 2022!\n\n\n*** THIS SHOW HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO MAY 28TH\, 2022 *** \nBikini Kill is a feminist punk band that was based in Olympia\, WA and Washington\, DC\, forming in 1990 and breaking up in 1997. Kathleen Hanna sang\, Tobi Vail played drums\, Billy Karren (a.k.a. Billy Boredom) played guitar and Kathi Wilcox played bass. Sometimes they switched instruments. Bikini Kill is credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement in the early 90’s via their political lyrics\, zines and confrontational live show. \nThe band started touring in June 1991. In addition to touring the US several times\, they also toured Europe\, Australia and Japan. Bikini Kill recorded and released a demo tape\, two EP’s\, two LP’s and three singles. Their demo tape was self-released\,while their first two records came out as a full length CD/Tape and their singles were posthumously collected on CD. \nBikini Kill believed that if all girls started bands the world would change. They actively encouraged women and girls to start bands as a means of cultural resistance. Bikini Kill was inspired by seeing Babes in Toyland play live and attempted to incite female participation and build feminist community via the punk scene. They used touring as a way to create an underground network between girls who played music\, put on shows and made fanzines. This independent media making and informal network created a forum for multiple female voices to be heard. \nBikini Kill reunited in the Spring of 2019 with original members Kathleen\, Kathi\, and Tobi who were joined live by Erica Dawn Lyle. They sold out multiple shows in Los Angeles\, NYC\, and London as well as headlining Riot Fest in Chicago. \nAutomatic refunds can be requested up to 1 day before the start of the event through your Eventbrite account. DESCRIPTION:THE GROUND AND SWEAT RECORDS PRESENTS BIKINI KILL ON MAY 27TH 2022!\n\n\n*** THIS SHOW HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO MAY 27TH 2022 *** \nBikini Kill is a feminist punk band that was based in Olympia\, WA and Washington\, DC\, forming in 1990 and breaking up in 1997. Kathleen Hanna sang\, Tobi Vail played drums\, Billy Karren (a.k.a. Billy Boredom) played guitar and Kathi Wilcox played bass. Sometimes they switched instruments. Bikini Kill is credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement in the early 90’s via their political lyrics\, zines and confrontational live show. \nThe band started touring in June 1991. In addition to touring the US several times\, they also toured Europe\, Australia and Japan. Bikini Kill recorded and released a demo tape\, two EP’s\, two LP’s and three singles. Their demo tape was self-released\,while their first two records came out as a full length CD/Tape and their singles were posthumously collected on CD. \nBikini Kill believed that if all girls started bands the world would change. They actively encouraged women and girls to start bands as a means of cultural resistance. Bikini Kill was inspired by seeing Babes in Toyland play live and attempted to incite female participation and build feminist community via the punk scene. They used touring as a way to create an underground network between girls who played music\, put on shows and made fanzines. This independent media making and informal network created a forum for multiple female voices to be heard. \nBikini Kill reunited in the Spring of 2019 with original members Kathleen\, Kathi\, and Tobi who were joined live by Erica Dawn Lyle. They sold out multiple shows in Los Angeles\, NYC\, and London as well as headlining Riot Fest in Chicago. \n \nWe are requiring proof of vaccination/boosters or a negative COVID test result within the past 72 hours for all show attendees. \n \nAutomatic refunds can be requested up to 1 day before the start of the event through your Eventbrite account. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Haitian Heritage Month with Chardavoine’s Haitian Jazz\n\n\n“Jazz at MOCA” is MOCA’s free outdoor concert series in-person on the last Friday of every month. On Friday\, May 27\, MOCA is pleased to present Haitian-born\, Brooklyn-bred guitarist Chardavoine. He has covered the gambit of musical styles through the waves of his guitar. Chardavoine has performed with Dave Valentin and performed for Aretha Franklin alongside the Tito Puente Jr. Orchestra. He is known for his interpretation of “Haitian jazz\,” a new genre emerging in jazz today. His latest release\, “The Tribute\,” is an eloquent testimony of this genre of music\, showcasing his talents not only as an excellent musician but also as a creative and seasoned arranger.  \nJazz at MOCA is free and open to the public. The gallery is open to view MOCA’s current exhibition\, “My Name is Maryan\,” from 7-10 p.m. with museum admission. Admission to the museum is $10. Admission for students\, seniors\, and visitors identifying as disabled is $3.
